Counselling for children "Play is their language and toys are their words" anon.
Children can find it hard to understand difficult emotions and often do not have the language to explain to us how they are feeling. We see their worries, sadness and distress through the behaviours and attitudes they display and we often see this as anger or anxiety. Counselling helps a child understand how they are feeling and encourages them to tell their story with a neutral person, in a confidential and safe environment using play, art, sand, metaphor and toys. Safe work with children involves building trust and connecting to their world in an appropriate, fun and real way so that they can begin to put words to the feelings and learn that much of what they feel is normal given the circumstances. The use of play, art and creative techniques helps them to process those feelings without needing to use lots of words.
